The gap that isn’t

“There is no shortage of drivers willing to work. There is a shortage of drivers willing to work for what is on offer.”

Drivers have said it for years, in cab chat, at truck stops and under every video about pay. The driving is rarely the problem. It is everything bolted on around it that eats the week.

  • Hours at the gateSat in a queue at a distribution centre, off the clock in all but name, while the booked slot comes and goes.
  • Rates that do not movePay that has barely shifted while diesel, food, rent and mortgages all went up.
  • Nowhere to parkNowhere safe to stop at the end of a shift, and nowhere decent to wash or eat when you do.
  • A cab that watches youTrackers, telematics scores and cameras, run by people who have never slept in a bunk.
  • The body sends the billLong days and early starts: the body takes them at twenty-five and pays for them at fifty.

If the gap is about willingness, a good driver has leverage. You just need three things.

What every hour really pays

Not the advertised rate. The real figure once every unpaid minute is counted.

What the rules actually say

Your hours, breaks, working time, pay for waiting, and the licence you are protecting.

What else is out there

Other firms, other work, agency, limited company or your own lorry, and what each one really pays.

Try it on your last week

The rate on the advert is not your rate.

Your true hourly rate is what you took home for the week, divided by every hour the job took, door to door, including the waiting nobody paid for. Put in your own numbers.

YOUR TRUE HOURLY RATE
£13.09

That is £2.91 an hour less than the advert.

Illustration only; nothing is sent anywhere. The Seven-Day Pay Check walks you through doing this properly with a week of real records.

  • Waiting at the RDCKnow Your Rate, Chapter 3: what the rules say about waiting, how to keep your own record, and how to raise it with the traffic office.
  • “A wait is not a break”Rule 8 of The 15 Rules: why logging a wait as a break costs you twice.
  • Periods of availabilityThe most misused button on the tacho, explained in plain English in Chapter 5.
  • Comparing job offersChapter 9 works out the true hourly rate of three example jobs side by side. The highest advert does not win.

The handbook

Know Your Rate

118 pages · 9 chapters

The pay handbook: what you really earn, where it goes, and how to change it.

  • Follow the money from shelf to cab: where your rate comes from, and whether the firm you work for looks healthy or stretched.
  • Hours, working time, breaks and periods of availability on one page, plus tachos, cameras, CPC and medicals.
  • Employed, agency, limited company or owner-driver, the twelve questions to ask before you sign, and the words to use when you ask for more.
  • Clean Air Zones and London permits, parking up safely, cargo theft, fuel that saves real money, and looking after your body and mind.
  • Going it alone: the O-licence, a full year of owner-driver costs, pricing a load, getting paid, and your exit plan.
The 15 Rules of the Road cover
The habits

The 15 Rules

86 pages · 15 rules

The rules nobody teaches at training school, the mistake each one fixes, and what that mistake costs you.

  • Rules of Money: know your true hourly rate; if it is not written down, it was not agreed; never price a job you have not costed.
  • Rules of the Law: your card, your licence, your risk; nobody can make you run over your hours; a wait is not a break.
  • Rules of the Long Haul: sleep is part of the job; park for safety, not convenience; plan your exit while you are still earning.
  • Every rule shows the cost in money, licence, health or time, and what to do instead.
  • All fifteen on one page at the back, to keep in the cab.

The workbook

The Seven-Day Pay Check

74 pages · one week

A one-week plan to find out what you really earn per hour, and what to do about it.

  • Day by day: gather your paperwork, log every hour, find the hidden unpaid time, work out your true rate.
  • Then check your rights, compare the market, and make your move.
  • Fill-in tables, a simple formula and a worked example. A notebook and your phone calculator are all you need.
  • Ends with a decision: ask for more, change job, or change how you work, with the words to use.

Sold together as one bundle. The three books are written to work as a set: understand the job, fix the habits, then audit your own week.

Peter Collins
Meet the author

Peter Collins

Peter is a UK HGV driver. On his YouTube channel, Peter Collins, he talks about the job as drivers actually live it: the pay, the hours, the waiting, the parking and the pressure, and the viewers who watch it are mostly drivers too.

These books grew out of the questions that keep coming up there. They set out how the money flows, what the rules really say, how to compare one job against another, and what a truck really costs to run, in plain English, from the driver’s side, and fair to the good employers and honest hauliers who do things properly.

Knowing your worth is never about cutting corners. A driver who knows the rules properly is harder to push around, not easier.

The books speak as books, not memoirs: examples are illustrations and their numbers are labelled as such. Where law, tax or health is involved, they tell you where to check: GOV.UK, DVSA, DVLA, HMRC, ACAS, an accountant or your GP.

No. It explains the rules and the money in plain English and points you to GOV.UK, the DVSA, DVLA, HMRC or ACAS for your own situation.

I’m thinking of going owner-driver. Is there enough on that?

Book one, part five, covers it: getting an operator’s licence, a year of owner-driver costs, pricing a load and getting paid.

What if it isn’t for me?

Refunds follow the policy on the checkout page. If something is wrong with your download, email us and we will put it right.
